Announcing the #bluekey Tweetathon
If you’ve been following talk of the Blue Key campaign on Twitter, you’ll have noticed that we’ve been using the #BlueKey hashtag to collate and curate our tweets and all mentions of the campaign and refugee issues on Twitter.
Thanks to all our Blue Key Champions, folks are really starting to sit up and notice. In fact, we owe all of you, but the Champions in particular a huge “THANK YOU,” because they are really helping to get the word out about the campaign.
And because they are so invested in raising awareness of refugee issues, some of the Champions came up with a great idea. “What if,” they said,” We do a #BlueKey tweetathon and get as many people we can talking about it… and hopefully getting a key?”
A tweetathon – what a great idea! If that word sounds funny to you, that’s ok. Basically, it will be like a telethon, except that it will take place on Twitter.
So here’s what’s going to happen, and when, for the first ever #BlueKey Tweetathon:
On Monday, June 13, from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. ET, several of the Blue Key Champions will be tweeting about the campaign, why they’re supporting it and urging people to get a key (remember, they’re just $5 each!). Just like in a good old-fashioned telethon, we’re going to talk #bluekey all the way from 9 am – 9 pm ET that day.

We’re also thrilled that a very special guest will be joining us from 1 – 2 p.m. ET. Roya Hosseini, wife of Blue Key campaign supporter, UNHCR Goodwill Envoy, and best-selling author Khaled Hosseini, will be joining us from 1-2 pm ET. Roya manages operations of and tweets for the Khaled Hosseini Foundation and will be sharing insights into the refugee crisis and why the Blue Key campaign is so important.
We’d love for you to join!
To prepare, just make sure you’re following @UNRefugeeAgency (that’s us) and @tkhf (the Khaled Hosseini Foundation). Then, whenever you can during that day, just sign into Twitter and follow the #bluekey hashtag to participate in the conversation.
As much as possible during that time, urge people to get a $5 #bluekey and make a difference to refugees worldwide.
We’ve made it easy for you – copy and paste any of the below that speak to you and your followers. We’ve pre-populated the tweets with links for extra simplicity… and they’re each already under 140 characters!
- For just $5, your #bluekey could help @UNRefugeeAgency save a life. Get your key today: http://ow.ly/5d4VC
- Did you know that there are more than 43 million refugees worldwide? http://ow.ly/5d54i Your $5 #bluekey could open a new door for them.
- “Kite Runner” author Khaled Hosseini says “anyone can be a refugee” http://ow.ly/5d59P Your $5 #bluekey could help change that. Get it today!
You can also RSVP to our Twtvite or on the event invitation on our Facebook page. Post your Twitter handle in the event comments so that we know to look out for you!
Hope to see you at the #bluekey tweetathon on Monday!
Jill, it is my pleasure! We are so thrilled that you will be participating in the Tweet-a-thon! Thank you for your support!
Caitlin -- The tweetathon is fantastic(!) Thanks for bringing it to fruition and I really look forward to participating (will also hold the 5pm shift). This blog post is useful too (the twitter content is a big help).
